  • Lewis Hamilton's teammate, Lando Norris, showed off his impressive control behind the wheel on Sunday afternoon as he clinched his first ever Formula One victory at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The 22-year-old British driver had been tipped to be a star in the making after winning his maiden F1 race in Monaco earlier this year. But few expected him to take the checkered flag on his home soil at the Sakhir circuit, where he finished ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

Norris was in complete control from the start of the race, taking the lead from Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas on lap one. He then set about building up a comfortable lead over the rest of the field, before crossing the line in front of Verstappen and Leclerc.

"It's incredible," McLaren team principal, Andreas Seidl,Bundesliga News Flash said of Norris' performance. "He has worked so hard and now he's finally got it right. It's just amazing."

Seidl added that Norris' victory is a huge confidence boost for the team going forward, with the Briton now having tasted success in a top-flight championship for the first time.

"Today was a special day for everyone involved at McLaren," Seidl continued. "We've seen a lot of effort and dedication from our entire team, and we're really proud of what Lando achieved today."

Norris himself expressed his delight at winning his first F1 race, saying: "It feels absolutely amazing. I'm so grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout this journey, especially my family back home in England. This is a dream come true for me."

As well as being a historic moment for Norris, Sunday's victory also marked another milestone for McLaren as they returned to their roots by running their own car for the first time since 2007.

"We were able to put together a great car this weekend and give Lando the opportunity to shine," Seidl said. "It's a fantastic result for us all and I can't wait to see how we perform next week in Spain."
